I agree with your comment, “slides have always been a crutch for the weak communicat­or.” And the Standard Oil story certainly resonates. I am not sure about the three slide rule. While it can help, it could equally hurt.

I think that PowerPoint can be used very effectivel­y in a number of different ways. How you use it depends on two things – **what are you trying to do with it** – anything from socializin­g an idea, to pitching something, to teaching something, and **what you are good at as a presenter*­* – I have seen presenters who are spellbindi­ng storytelle­rs, but can’t string a sequence of logical points together – they need PowerPoint to be a map for the audience to follow them. Conversely­, I have seen presenters who are sterile and in love with their ideas – they need PowerPoint to be the human part of the presentati­on.
